Most laser treatments require you to avoid tanning and limit your sun exposure before as well as after the treatment, as treated areas are more sensitive and susceptible to UV damage. In the case of laser hair removal, too much sun exposure can even negatively impact the effectiveness of your treatment.
Laser light targets melanin, the pigment cells that reside in your hair follicle. Tanning increases the melanin in your skin. So if your skin is too tanned, lasers cannot distinguish between hair and skin and your treatment won't be as effective. Furthermore, excessive tanning before any laser treatment can cause complications such as burning or discoloration of the skin.
