Reiki Therapy
Practitioners of Reiki, an ancient Japanese healing
system, use light hand placements to channel healing energies to the recipient.
Reiki is commonly used to treat emotional and mental distress as well as
chronic and acute physical problems. It is also used to assist the recipient
in achieving spiritual focus and clarity. Reiki practitioners may vary widely
in the techniques they use. Reiki is based on the principle of Universal
Life Energy or Chi. This modality involves hands-on touch and visualization
serving to align chakras and bring healing energy to the entire body. Reiki
methods are beginning to be recognized by conventional medicine. They are
considered "alternative" procedures by mainstream medicine and have been
associated with spiritual healing. Its relaxing effect, however, is not refuted.
The main uses of this therapy is for harmonizing the body and soul; increasing
well-being and inner peace; as well as easing psychological problems, fatigue,
headaches, backaches, and immune system problems.
Yoga
Yoga is a general term for a range of body/mind exercise
practices used to access consciousness and encourage physical and mental
well-being. Some forms concentrate on achieving perfection in posture and
alignment of the body; others aim at mental control to access higher
consciousness. Between these two are forms of yoga that focus on the
interrelationship of body, mind, and energy.
Gua-Sha
Gua Sha is a healing technique used in Asia by
practitioners of Traditional Medicine, in both the clinical setting and in
homes, but little known in the West. It involves palpation and cutaneous
stimulation where the skin is pressured, in strokes, by a round-edged instrument;
that results in the appearance of small red petechiae called 'sha', that
will fade in 2 to 3 days. Raising ÒshaÓ removes blood stagnation
considered pathogenic, promoting normal circulation, and metabolic processes.
The patient experiences immediate relief from pain, stiffness, fever, chill,
cough, nausea, and so on. Gua Sha is valuable in the prevention and treatment
of acute infectious illness, upper respiratory and digestive problems, and
many other acute or chronic disorders.
Cupping
Cupping is an ancient technique of applying heated
vessels to the skin. Today, small vessels or cups made of glass
are warmed, and the vessel opening is placed against specific skin zones
- reflex zones - usually on the back, abdomen, or legs. Stimulating these
zones by drawing blood flow to them in turn stimulates the tissues and internal
organs to which the zones are believed to correspond. Also, the cups create
minor bruising, which triggers the immune system and respond to the "injury."
Thus, localized blood-flow stimulation causes systemic stimulation. This
is primarily used for alleviating rheumatic disorders; migraines, head, neck,
and back pain; sprains; high blood pressure; stomach, intestinal, liver,
kidney, and lung diseases; and asthma.
Hot Stone Therapy
Hot Stone Massage is becoming a widely known therapy
for its deeply relaxing benefits. It employs a technique that uses smooth,
heated stones which may be placed on specific acupressure points on the body
to melt away knots, tension, and stress. It can be applied as a relaxation
technique sometimes incorporating the use of essential oils. The hot stone
experience relieves pain, promotes relaxation, harmony, balance, and
peace.
